I even started a completely new file just so I could make absolutely sure I wasn’t missing anything and had powered up Alex and Luna as much as humanly possible.Ī few years ago a friend of mine was yelling at me for not liking Final Fantasy 8, so I took screenshots of my PS1 memory card to show him I gave that game a fair chance. I got so angry it felt like I wanted to break my Playstation controller. I’m not kidding, I spent hours bashing my head against this boss. By the time you heal one character, the other one’s dead. When he hits, he hits for almost half of your character’s total health, and you can very, very easily get trapped in a cycle where you just can’t heal faster than he can deal damage. This video makes short work of the boss, but no matter how much I tried, I could not get past him. Then you face the boss of The Cave of Trials. The Wizard’s already done the cave, so he leaves your party temporarily and says he’ll meet you at the city’s entrance, reducing your party down to just two characters. For you to get in to Vane, you must first clear The Cave of Trials to prove your worth. With a little bit of strategy, they go down easy enough.īut then you party up with a Wizard-in-training, and he wants to go back home to his magic city, Vane. For the first two or three bosses, that’s not so bad. In most RPGs, you can just grind out some levels in order to get past a difficult boss fight, right? To me, that’s part of what makes them special. There’s a quirk with Lunar in particular. I was primed and ready to play the hell out of this game. Just to drive that point home even further, Working Designs threatened that, after one year, Silver Star Story Complete would be going in to “ the vault”, so buy your copies now before they aren’t available anymore. Point is: this game felt like a big deal. It looks expensive, and it was expensive – $70, in an era where most Playstation games cost $40. Silver Star Story Complete comes with a hard-bound 100+ page color instruction booklet (which doubles as a walkthrough up to the first major boss), a cloth map, a soundtrack CD, a special “Making-Of” disc with an hour-long video documentary, and of course, the actual game itself. Ten years before “collector’s editions” for big games became the norm, Working Designs put this out for the Playstation:

Working Designs goes all out you aren’t just buying a game, you’re buying a package. They’ve been in this business for almost a decade, which, back then, was actually pretty impressive.Īll three converge in Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete for the Playstation. They were doing work all the way back on the TurboGrafx and Sega CD. Working Designs is an old school translation company. Suddenly we went from a rare handful of releases to the floodgates being opened. Final Fantasy VII made JRPGs “cool.” The Playstation is awash in them. Cartoons?
